Kaplan, Mordecai Menahem
(1881-1983)
   American rabbi and founder of the Reconstructionist movement. He was born in Lithuania and at the age of nine emigrated with his family to the US. After his ordination he became rabbi of Kehillath Jeshurun synagogue in New York. In 1909 he became dean of the Teachers Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York. Later he taught homiletics, midrash and philosophy of religion at the seminary's rabbinical school. He developed a concept of Judaism known as Reconstructionism, and in accordance with his ideas in 1922 set up a congregation known as the Society for the Advancement of Judaism. He also established the Jewish Reconstructionist Foundation. His writings include Judaism as a Civilization, The Meaning of God in Modern Jewish Religion and The Future of the American Jew.
